Lift your eyes Children of the wise Look into the skies See if you can spy his star Who is he? Is he not the king?
Prophesied of old Coming for his people Coming for his people

Good News 03:58
Chosen by the Lord, Zechariah came Through the temple doors as the people prayed Prayers of his own and his faithful wife Asking for a child would be satisfied “Good news I bring to you, a message of hope and truth For God has heard your prayers and He is sending you a child For there is great joy in the plans of God” Though the angel spoke truly from the Lord Fear and doubt took hold of Zechariah’s heart “Good news I bring to you, a message of hope and truth Your son will be a prophet who turns many hearts to God For there is great joy in the plans of God” “I stand here in God’s presence, You have heard what God has planned But instead in unbelief you’re looking for the will of man If you won’t believe His promise, then be silent before God For this is good news I bring to you, a message of hope and truth When you see the son that God has promised in His time You’ll find great joy You’ll find great joy For there is great joy in the plans of God"

Proclamation 04:47
When the appointed time drew near, mighty Gabriel appeared In the town of Nazareth to Mary, the virgin betrothed to Joseph "Greetings favored one, the Lord our God is with you Do not fear, I bring good news The Lord has chosen you to bear a holy child And you shall call his name Jesus He will be great, and will be known As the Son of the Most High He will reign forever And his kingdom will not end The Holy Spirit of the Lord will come upon you In order to make this word come true His power and might will be great at work within you To bring the holy Son of God to us" "How can this be if what you say is true? How can I bear to carry the weight of this great child?" "With man it is impossible But nothing's impossible with God" “I am a servant of the Lord Let it be to me according to your word"
4.
Son of David 03:54
Oh God, what do I do with this horrible news? What do I do with a girl who is due to give birth months before we are to wed? Why me? For so long I waited for someone who’s right Who tries to live blameless in your sight But now it seems that hopeful dream has died Still I don’t want to bring her further shame I need to end this and send her away But I don’t know if it’s the right thing Is everything that’s happening Really happening for a reason? Where are you in this brokenness? Will you help this son of David? “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to wed young Mary For that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” Oh, what a mystery you have revealed! Apparent failure turned to God’s own will The ancient prophet’s words are now fulfilled For everything that’s happening Is happening for a reason “Behold the virgin shall conceive And bear Immanuel” For everything that’s happening Is happening for a reason You’re working in our brokenness To send your promised Savior The Son of David, Son of David

Wonder 04:01
In those days, Mary arose And went with haste out into the country Out to see Elizabeth Her relative whom God had sent a baby At least, that’s what the angel had told her So she set out on a road of faith to see, thinking Why would God grant this to me? I know I don’t deserve a thing from Him When Elizabeth saw her walk up The promised baby in her jumped for joy Cause it was then that God’s Spirit moved within her And at the wonder of His plan she then exclaimed, saying Why would God grant this to me? I know I don’t deserve a thing But blessed are you among women, Mary Blessed is the fruit of your womb, young Mary Oh, but Mary knew His favor wasn’t just for her But for men and women who will see her Son break their curse And believe, saying Why would God grant this to me? I know I don’t deserve a thing But blessed is the God who keeps His promise Blessed is the One He’s sent to save us
6.
My God has blessed His servant I praise His holy name He’s looked upon this girl And made her mother of a King For now all generations Will know that our God saves I trust this holy mystery I give Him all my praise O soul, rejoice! Rejoice, rejoice! Come magnify my Lord Rejoice, rejoice! For all of His justice and mercy For all of His marvelous love For He has remembered His child Rejoice! For God has shown His strength, His works Are known throughout all time For hungry and for poor His heart Has moved to well provide From Abraham to Malachi His people have endured The Lord has kept His promises According to His word O Israel, rejoice! Rejoice, rejoice! Come magnify our Lord Rejoice, rejoice! For all of His justice and mercy For all of His marvelous love For He has remembered His children Rejoice!
7.
Shame, shame hangs on me like a weight How I wish I would have obeyed Now I am silent as the grave For now I sit in darkness I feel the shadow of death I await God’s tender mercy When my son shall be born But I know he is on the horizon Waiting to breathe for the first time He is so close to arriving Though there’s pain in the birth, there’s joy in the life Oh God, break the silence John, you are the boy that I didn’t believe in You are the son that I couldn’t conceive of You are my child who has come For days, days I was waiting to speak Days quickly turned into weeks But God had a promise to keep That’s why I sat in darkness I felt the shadow of death But God showed His tender mercy When you, my son, arrived He gave me my voice again Blessed, blessed be the Lord of Israel For he promised Abraham, as well As our fathers and prophets did tell Oh, they did tell 'Cause they knew it was on the horizon Waiting to shine for the first time Though it was so far from arriving They remembered in faith the promise God gave Of the One who will save, and the covenant He made They remembered and obeyed They obeyed My child, you are the joy of my life What I wouldn’t give to stop time now But I know that you are not mine So when the Lord calls you out to proclaim The name of the One who will save I pray that you will obey So that those who sit in darkness Those in the shadow of death Might see God’s tender mercy When His Son shall rise And He sends His light Then we’ll have life again And I know He is on the horizon Waiting to breathe for the first time Our long-expected Messiah He’s coming to fix all that’s broken and dying And He is so close to arriving Oh God, break the silence Oh God, break the silence Oh God, break the silence
8.
In the days of Caesar, he sent a decree To register all people by each family Men by their forefathers, drawn back to their towns People of the kingdom counted by their crown Behold, Immanuel is come, Incarnate God is formed For the one who knows all men, Jesus, is born Joseph, in obedience, went from Nazareth south To Bethlehem he headed, one from David’s house Peasant his appearance, kingly though his line Humble-hearted pilgrim, loving still his bride Behold, Immanuel is come, Incarnate God is formed For the Promised Prince of old, Jesus is born Reaching David’s city, pain bade Mary cry For shelter, help, and comfort, space to bear her child But no one offered mercy; inns all shut their door So tired mother Mary gave birth on stable floor Behold, Immanuel is come, Incarnate God is formed For the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus is born Savior learned obedience, Father led His Child To bear His people’s burden, climb a cross and die But Death is not His master: life sprang from His grave Now Jesus lives forever and will return one day. Behold, Immanuel will come, Incarnate God and Lord For the one who comes by faith, in Jesus is born
9.
When the shepherds kept their watching There were no silent flocks There were animals calling Simple men at their jobs And while Bethlehem was sleeping There were angels aloft Not over palaces or temples But over shepherds and flocks In the footsteps of David and Abel Even if they had never been told But though all are asleep God keeps watching His sheep So on this night, He sent them an angel “Fear not, for behold I bring you good news There’s great joy for all people God’s revealing to you For in a Bethlehem stable The Savior is born You will find Him in a manger He is Christ the Lord Glory to God! Glory in the highest! Glory, glory in the highest! Glory to God! Glory in the highest! Glory, glory in the highest! And on earth, peace among those with whom He’s pleased”
10.
Let Us Go 03:07
Let us go over to Bethlehem and see If what the angels said is really happening If God has spoken Then we trust that it will be, so Let us go then Let us go then Let us go then to see And so with haste we come here to this lowly place Just like ourselves, to find young Mary and her baby In the manger God’s only Son sent here to save, so Let us praise Him Let us praise Him Let us praise Him To think that God would come to us so humbly To think He’d save ones who were so undeserving We can’t contain this love, It’s for the world to see When we return, there’s no concealing what’s inside What has occurred to make once dead men come alive Who we have heard we have believed, now glorify Let us go then Let us go then Let us go then, see Him Let us go then, trust Him Let us go then, praise Him Let us go then to tell
11.
Let us rise Wanderers in the night Following his light Now shining for the world to see Lift your eyes Seek the coming king Savior, Son of God Coming for His people Coming for His people Behold, Immanuel will come

about

“‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” —Luke 2:10-11

In many ways, Good News, Great Joy is an attempt to explore the question: why is Christ's coming good news, and how can it bring us great joy?

Several years ago, my good friend Preston Eastwood and I wrote four songs based on the Christmas story found in the first two chapters of Luke’s gospel. We wrote these songs wanting to dig deep into the details of the lives of these men and women and learn about how they responded to the coming of Christ. We shared those first four songs at our church’s Christmas Eve service that year. The next year, we added even more songs from those first two chapters of Luke, and the year after that, even more songs, until it became not only this full concert of music, but a sweet yearly tradition of reflection, remembrance, and worship.

We wrote these songs with the belief that to truly understand the glory and blessing of Christmas, one must consider each scriptural detail of its narrative in sequence. In a musical sense, that also means adapting the harmony, melody, and instrumentation to each theme and moment in the story, and accenting the unique voice of each character from Scripture.

Wherever you're at this holiday season, I hope you'll find a way to step into the story of this album and of Luke 1-2. I pray you'll find the coming of Jesus to be good news, even today, that brings great joy.
